This paper presents the organization and management of global vector data based on geographic information grid, and the spatial index and 3D visualization techniques for vector data over the whole world, which meets the requirements of quarry, spatial analyze and geographic information services.The main works and creations are as the following:1. Summarize related works on geographic information grid, vector data model, spatial index, 3D visualization of vector data.2. Present the organization and management of global vector data based on geographic information grid, in which all the information inside vector data was kept while vector data being brought into the composite geographic information grid. Then descript the transform between grid code and index of vector data in details. Introduce object oriented vector data model, which is then used in the organization of multi-resolution vector data. And discuss the map projection and coordinate transformation when bring vector data into the composite geographic information grid, and simplify process methods multi-resolution vector data generation.3. Introduce Quad-R trees into the vector data spatial index under the composite geographic information grid. First, analyze the limitations and drawbacks of quad tree and R tree. Then present and realize the index method based on Quad-R tree.4. The 3D visualization methods of vector data can be divided into three approaches: Geometry merged, Geometry layer, Texture-based. There are some problems when these methods applying on LOD terrain, so this paper present some improvements. At last, this paper realizes the correct real-time rendering of vector data on the multi-resolution terrain model.5. Design and implement a prototype system based on geographic information grid. This system, developed by Visual C++ and OpenGL, is the result of above research, and needs to be improved in the future.
