With the rapid economic development, China's urbanization is under the rapid development, but it is just the reason why some social problems is increasing, and urban transport problems is one of the most obvious problem. In some citites of our country, transport infrastructure lags, traffic congestion, excessive exhaust emissions, the decline in environmental quality has become increasingly attracted people's attention. These problems cause many negative effects, such as the increase in operating costs, time wasted, more traffic accidents and noise pollution and so on. These negative effects hindered development of national economy in some levels. Therefore, developing the intelligent transportation is imperative in China.Safety, high-speed, efficient, modernization has become the subject of intelligent transportation. In everyday life, common traffic lights control system has been unable to adapt to current traffic conditions. Improving and developing the intelligent traffic lights control system, making it adapt to the development of current traffic, is one of effective ways to develop intelligent transportation system.On the other hand, with the development of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and Programmable Logic Device (PLD), the application of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is more and more extensive, including many high-tech fields such as digital circuit design, microprocessor system, DSP, communications and ASIC (Application Sepcific Integrated Circuit) design and so on.FPGA can not only implement the electronic system miniaturization, low power consumption, high reliability, but also its development cycle is short, the cost is low and chip price is falling. Because of these advantages, the technology of FPGA has become one of the necessary skills for the hardware engineers and Integrated Circuit (IC) logic design engineers.Based on EDA technology and FPGA-related knowledge, used Verilg HDL, this paper respectively designed and implemented two kinds of traffic lights control system for two different intersections situations. One of them is suitable for busy section of the city, and the other adapts to the urban and rural junction. The paper completed the following works:1.The paper describes the composition, working principle and design requirements of the two kinds of traffic lights control system. The city traffic lights at busy sections can not only meet the demands of daily work, but also improves the whole traffic lights control system against the emergency vehicles passing. At the same time, considering the actual situation of less traffic flow during off-peak on the rural roads, the paper perfected and improved the other kind of traffic lights control system in order to ensure that trunk road continues unimpeded during the non-peak period.2.The paper provided the whole design program of the traffic lights control system, used modular design principles and designed three main modules, including divider module, traffic lights control module, digital tube display module, according to the actual operating situation.3.The paper gave the process of how to connect the hardware circuit, used light-emitting diodes insdead of traffic lights and displayed the time remaining with eight digital tubes.4.Completing the configuration for FPGA and FLASH PROM through the JTAG interface, connecting the hardware circuit and the development board and to verify the final results.Through the work above, the two kinds of traffic lights control system in this paper can run properly in accordance with design requirements. Besides, we tried to improve the system to avoid the potential risks caused by emergency vehicle passing and solve the rigid problem of traffic lights control system. The result shows that this two kinds of traffic light control system can be applied to real life with practical and research value and has the value of practical and research.
