Optical Fiber laser is not only widely used in optical communication field (such as for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system, multi-wavelength fiber lasers and time-division multiplexing (OTDM) of the ultra-fast pulse mode-locked fiber laser), but also have broad and important applications in ultrafast optics, optical fiber transmission sense, industrial processing, optical information processing, full color display, laser-guided, laser printing, medical and other fields. As to optical fiber laser, mode-locked fiber laser for optical fiber communication system can not only provide ultra-short pulse source compatible, and play an important role in the mode-locked fiber sensing and basic research as well. Now, it has aroused great interest for many labs.Passively mode-locked fiber laser produce shorter pulses than the active mode-locked fiber laser. In addition, it does not need any external active modulation devices. The cavity structure not only easier, but also can achieve all-optical integration. The advantages of small size, low power consumption, fast response, nonlinear large and easy to integrate make it became increasingly important role for DWDM. Compared with the others passively mode-locked fiber laser, SOA passively mode-locked fiber laser has advantages of simple, convenient, analysis and design speed and low cost.In this paper, the basic theory of semiconductor optical amplifiers, the experiment and numerical simulation of SOA passive mode-locked fiber lasers are present, mainly including the following aspects:1. Summarizes the development of passively mode-locked fiber laser, an analysis of its working principle, clamping methods and key technologies.2. A systematic exposition of the semiconductor optical amplifier basic structure and working principle, the random electromagnetic field traveling wave and SOA equation and carrier rate equation is derived .3. The establishment of dynamic model of semiconductor optical amplifiers, simulate SOA passively mode-locked fiber laser using matlb, detailed analysis affection of the filter, and study of various parameters impaction on the performance of semiconductor optical amplifiers4. Through using of non-symmetric polarization and SOA nonlinearity, structure optical loop mirror NOLM to obtain mode-locked pulse.5. Theoretical and experimental results are analyzed.
