This study has been done on the basis of documentary, investigation, statistics, logical reasoning, etc., oriented toward 20 Jiangsu regular higher education institutions (hereinafter referred to as " HEI,,). Based on a thorough investigation and rational analysis on the teaching status of tennis courses, some objective discrimination and in-depth exploration have been made toward the existing problems and causes as well, and accordingly some possible solutions and proposals have been put forward for improving the tennis teaching in Jiangsu regular HEI. The specific conclusions reached are offered as follows: (1) The tennis teaching goal set down by Jiangsu regular HEI basically in line with the requirements of Guidelines for 2002 National Regular HEI Physical Education on promulgated by the Ministry of Education. (2) some of HEI don't use the unified teaching materials in the teaching process and teaching plan is out of line with teaching notes. (3) the students of Jiangsu regular HEI like tennis courses very much and most of them choose tennis courses according to their interest with clear learning purposes. (4) HEI offer tennis courses in 3 ways:the first is selective courses, the second is elective courses, the third is both. However, some of HEI don't offer tennis courses. (5) Some of HEI don't have enough teaching periods, students are too crowded in the same class, and the theory and the practice don't balance. (6) The teaching contents of practice remain the same and seem reasonable, but the contents of theory are relatively outdated. (7) Currently the traditional teaching means and methods still dominate the Tennis teaching in Jiangsu regular HEI. (8) The study evaluation includs mainly theory and practice. The teacher's terminal evaluation of unified standard of techniques study is still dominant in the practice. The examination content, method, and standard adopted in the Tennis teaching of Jiangsu regular HEI have become unsuitable. (9) The tennis teachers are less qualified and 84.62% of which are from other courses, so they are not well qualified in professional techniques. Male and female teachers don't balance and the latter is less. (10) The tennis teachers are not sound in the age structure---old and young teachers are less than middle-aged teachers, low in their educational level, small in the percentage of high-rank professional titles inadequate in academic research work, and lack of advanced question for study and high quality papers. It is also low in the ranks of professional referees, most students are not satisfied with the Tennis teaching. All-in-one integration of education of tennis teachers is needed. (11) The lack of tennis gymnasium and equipment is one of the elements which prevent the Tennis teaching of Jiangsu regular HEI from being developed. In conclusion, this thesis aimed at providing Some theoretical basis for the competent authority in charge of tennis teaching of Jiangsu regular HEI in their decision-making as well as a source of reference for the tennis teaching practice in Jiangsu regular HEI...
