Portfolio assessment is being put into practice in some areas of teaching in China. The purpose of the research is to find out whether it can be an effective tool in senior English reading learning and teaching. The most important is whether portfolio assessment will have a good effect on the use of reading strategies and thus facilitate the reading ability.In the paper, there are altogether six chapters. Chapter One is an introduction. It introduces the significance of the study and the literature review on portfolio assessment.Chapter Two provides the concept and principles of portfolio assessment This part also describes different types of assessments, including summative assessment, formative assessment and portfolio assessment, and the relationship among them. The portfolio assessment includes two sections:one is concerned about the reasons for choosing portfolio assessment and its principles and features, and the other focuses on its functions.Chapter Three mentions reading comprehension and the reading requirement in senior school.Chapter Four is a case study on the use of portfolio assessment in Yuying Senior School in Jinjiang, Fujian.This part includes seven sections. Section One mentions the research problems.Section Two introduces the research participants.Section Three is about research methodology and the instruments.Section Four introduces the research procedures, strategies training and word meaning guessing.Section Five is about the analysis of long sentence.Section Six is about the training of inference.Section seven is the hypothesis.Chapter Five is the testing and data analysis of the experiment.Chapter Six is the conclusion which includes findings and limitations. Students share learning achievements. Section One mentions the research questions.
