Zhu ziqing is a famous essayist in China, as well as a well-known Chinese educator. He was very concerned about Chinese teaching in middle schools. He thought that Chinese teaching should not merely pay attention to the cultivation of students' writing ability, while neglecting their ability of the understanding and appreciation. Therefore, he always made his effort to improve students' reading ability. He said that reading needed thorough understanding, and appreciation was based on the correct and thorough understanding. In order to fully understand the text, we must pay attention to every word and understand its meaning, which was just ignored by most students who had careless attitudes towards reading. To realize the goal of thorough understanding in reading teaching, he suggested that we should use more recitation, comparison, analysis, and explanation so as to improve students' reading ability radically. In the paper, we introduce Zhu's "thorough understanding" approach in the reading teaching, trace its academic origin, reveal its value, and find out its significance to today's Chinese teaching curriculum.
