Fifty-seven years has passed since Tsinghua University took the lead in setting up the student supervisor system in 1953. During this period, despite the changing of their responsibilities, student supervisors in colleges and universities have developed through the years to be versatile educational workers with multiple duties of ideological and political education, management, and mental health service, making great contribution in training qualified personnel for China's socialist construction.Along with the progress of the society and the sustained development of higher education, student supervisors have met with in their work many challenges and frustrations, and an effective counter-measure is to promote the construction of a contingent of professional or specialized student supervisors.This paper begins with a report of the present situation of college student supervisors in Jiangsu, a province at the transition from quantity-oriented education to quality-oriented education; then, it gives an in-depth analysis of the existing problems and their contributing factors, elaborates the gap between the current situation and the needs for building a professional supervisor contingent, with related suggestions provided.Five chapters are presented. The first chapter is an introduction highlighting the problem, significance, basic concepts, logical structure and methods of the research. Chapter two briefly introduces the buildup and development of student supervisor system. Chapter three is an analysis of the background of the specialization of student supervisors from the macro, middle-level and micro point of view respectively. Chapter four, by employing a method of stratified sampling, discusses a survey on 1000 students, 250 supervisors from 10 in 44 colleges of Jiangsu province conducted to deepen the understanding of the present situation of student supervisors. Chapter five puts forward the countermeasures for the problems in specializing student supervisors in colleges and universities.
