| The construction of the peace mechanism in the Korean Peninsula has been one of the hottest topics which have been paid much attention to by the scholars who study the issues of Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula. After the Cold War, the problems such as the hysteresis of the 1953 armistice agreement, the burst of the situation in Korean Peninsula and its uncertainty, have been put in the foreground, owing to the adjustment of the security structure in Northeast Asia. The Korean Peninsula needs a new peace mechanism to regulate the behavior of the related actors in order to maintain the peace of the peninsula. As a matter of fact, the present structure of the Korean Peninsula is a regional multilateral strategic framework, which is far from a stable security framework because the peninsula has not been completely divorced from the cold war pattern. Therefore, it is essential for the Korean Peninsula to change the present armistice mechanism into the permanent peace mechanism, for only in this way can the intense situation in the Korean Peninsula be eased off. Although there still exist apparent differences between the related actors in the security concepts and the means for the pursuit of security within the Northeast Asia system, there is still a ray of hope for the construction of a new peace mechanism in the peninsula. Once the mechanism is constructed, the first beneficiaries will be its own country and the local people. No doubt, besides the two countries concerned, the DPRK and the ROK, the future peace mechanism in the peninsula, cannot be constructed without the participation of the neighboring great powers such as the US, China, Russia and Japan. At present, the great powers around the peninsula agree with each other in keeping the stability of the peninsula, but on such problems as the peninsula is going to construct the new peace mechanism in what model, in what way, and by what steps in the future, their opinions are greatly diverged even with competition and conflict. Therefore, it is still a long-term task for the relevant countries to manage to construct a lasting peace mechanism in the peninsula with new thinking.Although the construction of the peace mechanism in the Korean Peninsula has been influenced by a lot of factors of the great powers in Northeast Asia, the thesis will only analyze the roles and influence played and exerted by China and ROK in the realization of the peace mechanism in the peninsula. China and ROK are the important countries in Northeast Asia. The improvement and development of the relationship between them not only have direct influence on the North-South relation but also on the changes of the situations in the Korean Peninsula. As the identification of the strategic partnership between China and ROK, the relation has been promoted to the level of strategic cooperation in such aspects as military and security. It should be pointed out that China and ROK have mutual interests in the aspect of the security of the Korean Peninsula. In order to keep the peace and stability in the peninsula, both countries are determined to solve the nuclear issue in DPRK through peaceful negotiations and consultations and take an active part in their cooperation. The focus of the thesis is as follows. Through the analysis of the cooperative performance of China and ROK in the peninsula affairs, the thesis points out that the cooperation of the two countries has accelerated the Korean Peninsula denuclearization process, intensified the stability of the mechanism, promoted the development of the peaceful unification of the peninsula, and played active roles in the early realization of the peace mechanism in the peninsula. On this basis, the thesis makes a creative study on the model of the peace mechanism and the relevant problems on its construction, and puts forward some suggestions and tentative ideas about the cooperation direction of China and ROK's involvement in the issue on the peace mechanism in the Korean Peninsula. |
