Research On Opium In The Regions Of Gansu And Ningxia During The Period Of The Republic Of China

As a watershed in China's old and new systems, the period of the Republic of China is also the transition of this system. Warlords, political devolution, people living in dire poverty, variety of social problems are arising in a short span of several decades. In the northwest corner of China, Gansu and Ningxia regions'development is lagging behind in the advance team and is always the last one. In the regions of Gansu and Ningxia during this period, due to special ethnic relations, Hui warlord forces developed their strength. However, Hui warlord relies on opium tax as pillars of economy because of the harsh natural environment. Although the food production in poor areas of Gansu and Ningxia are very unfavorable, the cultivation of opium is widely accepted by farmers because of its heavy production. The writer used these contests as its theme, in the purpose of combing the realities of the developmental situation in Gansu and Ningxia regions, planting scale, use, trafficking, as well as its harmful influences on Gansu and Ningxia people. Consequently, the writer analyzes the reason why opium can't be prohibited for a long time and the inevitability of its long-term existence.During the period of the Republic of China in Gansu and Ningxia regions, opium has become the major problem of the society; it has an inevitable correlation with the warlords. Gansu and Ningxia warlords use various tactics to collect opium taxes. Although opium brings high interests for farmers, it adds their pain even more. For example, it makes farmers indulge in drugs and damages to the labor force some of them even sell their children and end up with poverty and become beggars. It joint with usury disrupted the rural financial system and led to the complete collapse of rural economy. Although the government has taken various measures to ban smoking, politics has become a subsidiary of military power. However, warlords used anti-smoking as an excuse to collect additional taxes. Thus, the opium operating caused by serious social impact in the regions of Gansu and Ningxia during the period of theRepublic of China, and seriously hindered the development of society. Based on the previous studies, the writer used a unique method and focused on the problem of opium during the period of the Republic of China in Gansu and Ningxia regions. Moreover, the writer analyzes the relationship between the drug and other social reasons from both subjective and objective views. In addition, the thesis quoted data from previous collection to quantify this visual comparison to be able to further strengthen the integrity of qualitative analysis.
