The art of Beijing Opera masks is a kind of make-up and modeling means on stage.It is also an important represent of Chinese opera masks.Because of Beijing Opera masks,people begin to concern make-up means just as the whole performance of opera.Now in China and abroad, Beijing Opera masks'epidemic areas are very wide.lt is widely considered to sign of China traditional culture.According to the form of visual symbols of Beijing Opera masks,it has distinctive characteristics and outstanding visual beauty. According to the connotation of visual symbols of Beijing Opera masks,it is affected by religious cultures including confucian,tao and buddha and folk culture,containing profound emotion of Chinese national culture. The visual symbols of Beijing Opera Masks become a relatively complete symbol system. The discussion on the system of visual symbols of Beijing Opera masks has important fundamental research significance and practical application value.Studies on Beijing Opera masks are not many in China.They manifested as an introduction which just to show it.Studies became superficiality and the form of symbols not meeting with the connotation of symbols.On the whole, studies on Beijing Opera masks have not became a modern and scientific syetem.Because of it,the paper using scientific and modern semiotic theory,assisting with modern art theory, analyses the system of visual symbols of Beijing Opera masks from multi-level and multi-perspective. The paper establishes a scientific and systematic theory of the system of visual symbols of Beijing Opera masks,revealing the deep relation between the symbol form and the symbol connotation.The paper is elaborated in four parts. The first part points the research deficiency through the collation of the research in China and abroad.This part is raising questions.The second part includes chapter two and chapter three and chapter four. This part mainly analysis and discusses problems.It is paper's core part. Chapter two,first describes the general situation of Beijing Opera masks and relative theory of semiotics,dividing Beijing Opera masks' development into four stages,summarizing the visual symbols' characteristics of every development stage.They are the foundation of posterior study. Chapter three starts from syntactics of the system of visual symbols of Beijing Opera masks, analyzing its composition units,composition principles and composition principles' formation. This chapter proposes the system composed by colour symbols and graphic symbols,having three composition principles including obeying score formula's standard,following formal beauty's principles and dominated by aesthetic images of mask figure.The forming reason of composition principles includes double effect of establishing by usage and court standard,conscious pursuit of human aesthetic,double effect of collective aesthetic and individual aesthetic. Chapter four starts from semantics of the system of visual symbols of Beijing Opera masks, analyzing its symbol types,semantics and semantics' formation——semiotic code. This chapter points that colour symbols are mostly indication-symbols,graphic symbols mostly instruction-symbols.The symbols have three kinds of semantics including recognition function,evaluation function and decorative function. The forming reason of semantics includes general culture code,the other opera masks art code and individual code.The third part is application part including chapter five.It discusses the application in other areas through examples.The fourth part including chapter six,summarizes the paper's innovative points and results,also proposes the research deficiency and prospect.The paper's research is an important supplement to research on Beijing Opera masks. In the meantime,through the exploration in this paper,I believe that the method for analyzing the system of visual symbols of opera masks can be developed into a completely independent model for opera masks analysis,which can help us to understand the deep relation between the symbol form and the symbol connotation,and can set up a new area for opera masks research.
