Objective: To search for a safe and effective method for alleviating cancer pain, and observe the therapeutic effect of external application of Chinese medicine at pain points on cancer pain and then discuss its mechanism for providing a new method, more ideas and theoretical evidence for cancer pain treatment with traditional Chinese medicine. Methods: Points at which patients felt pains were selected without accompanied other points. And the therapeutic points were changed with the place of pain in which were obvious tender points. Sixty cases of cancer with pain by random digits table were divided into two groups: medication group and control group. Medication group was treated externally at pain points 5-8 times per day by wuqunzhitongding extracted from 500 ml 75% alcohol mixed with 20 g powder of Shengchuanwu, Shengcaowu, Chuanxiong, Ruxiang, Moyao, Tubiechong and Bingpian respectively at the basis of routine treatment with western medicine. Control group was treated according to the WHO Three Step Administration Principle, i.e. the patients with mild pain took aspirin, 25-100 mg per 4-6 h orally, moderate pain took codeine, 30-60 mg per 4-6 h orally and severe pain took morphine, first dose 10-30 mg , per 4-6 h orally. And the doses should be adjusted in accordance with individuals. After 7 days treatment, analgesic effective rate, the average analgesic onset time, duration, life quality and hemorheological indexes were observed from two groups. Results: The total effective rate in medication group and control group were 93.33% and 90.00% respectively, and the analgesic onset time in both groups were 24.22±5.61 min and 27.36±7.52 min respectively, and analgesic durations were 5.68±1.04 min and 5.89±1.76 min respectively. There was no difference between medication group and control group in total effective rate, analgesic onset time and duration (P>0.05), but the medication groups showed greater significance than in control group in life quality, hemorheological indexes changes and the occurrence of side effects (P<0.05).Conclusion: 1. The external application of Chinese medicine at pain points on cancer pain shows holistic concept and the spirit of theories of syndrome differentiation and classification of traditional Chinese medicine which has accurate and rapid effect, low side effect and easy use and control. It is better adopted by those patients who cannot take oral medicine in order to decrease the side effects of oral drugs, especially for the patients who have dyspepsia; 2. applying the Chinese medicine externally at points to treat cancer pain, the drug not only can have direct effect on the points, but also can play the general effect to increase the pain threshold and regulate the function of nervous and hormonal systems of the body in order to enhance the analgesic effect of Chinese medicine supported by the conductive function of meridians; 3. its analgesic effect is related to changing hemorheoloical indexes. This treatment can improve hemorheological changes; decrease the hypercoagulabale state, so that plays the role of reducing the cancer pain. ]...
