Urban Forests are paid more and more attention. Based on the reviews of urban forest studies, this dissertation analyse developing process and present situation of urban forest. By summarizing construct experiences of urban forest in China and abroad, the main existing problems are put forward. Take the Xi'an city as the example, the paper analyze the landscape patterns, structures and ecological benefits of urban forest and green lands systematically. Then the existing problems are put forward as well. The paper used the technique of 3S, measurements on the spot and the method of qualitative and quantitative. Based on the above studies and the lately urban development plan, the author accomplishes Urban Forest green lands construction mode in Xi'an city which has its own characteristics. The study will provide reference to the cities in Northwest China for urban forests developments The main results are as follows:1. Referring to the achievement and the practical experience of the research of the urban forest, considering the present situation and the trend of the urban forest and the ecological landscape construct, in accordance with the basic principle and concept of the ecology, the concept and the definition of the urban forest is discussed.2. Chinese urban forests have developed for about seventeen years. Now there are some problems. But two important questions needs be solved urgently so as to assuring a healthy and sustainable development.3Urban forest ecological plan and urban construction should be developed simultaneous in order to avoid the negative effect caused by urban development. And urban forests should be allocated scientifically on macro-scale and reserves enough space before the plan.(2) It is emergent to explore the potential space and improve the space utilization for the best functions and benefits.3. Use Kuainiao image as data resources, combine GIS and analysis of landscape pattern in Xi'an city, the dissertation studied forest landscape attributes. The result is that the total forest resources in Xi'an city are deficient, unbalanced and centralize. Urbangreening coverage is not high, small patches occupy large proportion. The present layouts of urban greening species fail to form intense eco-relationship and strong benefits.4. The green lands in Xi'an are classified by plantation structure of tree+shrub+herb, tree+herb, shrub+herb, tree, shrub, and lawn. And the paper compared the ecological benefits of different type green lands. The conclusion is that every type of green lands is beneficial to shading, lowering temperature, increasing humidity, lowering noise and killing bacteria. The ecological benefits of green lands with multilayer structure have greater ecological effects than those with single layer.5. Based on the study of urban forest structures, patterns and functions, recognize the entire ecological pattern and ecological need, the layout is put forward* which is "three green ring, two axis, four green wedges, tessellation of park, encircle the city with forest, isolate with green-strip and connect with green-net" .And the construction mode of different green lands in Xi'an city is given. Urban Forest emphasize on the Xi'an's characteristics, which is history and culture. That will provide theory reference for realize the target of "build a city in forest".During the case study of Urban Forests green lands in Xi'an city, the aims of Urban Forests development should also be deduced that isolated urban afforestation, which cannot meet the environmental needs especially in highly urbanized regions. Urban Forest must establishes good ecological relationship with its surrounding environment, by connecting the inner city with outside space, increasing the continuity of Urban Forests to relief the green space shortage within the built-up area. Building on the continuity of Urban Forest by associated with cities and regions can improve environmental quality on region scale. Then urban forest ecological systems with integrated functions will come into being throughout the whole country, and urban environment sustainable development can be assured.
