The internal combustion engine (ICE) industry is one of the most important in domestic mechanical manufacturing field which provides main packaging power for cars, agriculture machinery, construction machinery, ships and vessels, locomotives, drilling rigs, military and civil machinery, mobile and back-up power plants, etc. With the development of technology, improvement of people's consciousness about environment protection and ever - tensioning status of energy supply, more and more critical requirements are put forward to the reliability, service life, specific fuel consumption(SFC) and cost efficiency of engine, and the limits for noise and emission also become more stringent. The acceleration of China's steps of opening up and entering into WTO will confront the ICE industry with both more fierce market competition and more opportunities to develop itself. The crankshaft is a critical part of engine, and the quality of which has a direct effect on the performance and life of engine and is dependent on the material, mechanical machining, heat treatment and reinforcement closely. Being called "the heart of engine" ,it now faces challenges from both safety and reliability. The traditional processes are typically optimized for high efficiency, high precision, high cleanliness and high strength. The up-to-date processes define process procedures, optimize process solutions, predict possible defects in manufacturing and adopt protective measures, control and guarantee the quality by means of computer technology and simulation technology so as to make the design carried out on the base of quantitative analysis instead of just experiences. And thus the manufacturing process technology becomes an engineering science. ICE builders should determine the optimal process solutions and technology most...
