The ferry-shipping lane from Yadanshan of Dinghai District, Zhoushan to Baifeng of Beilun District, Ningbo is called as the Ya-Bai Sea Route for short. Located in the western coast of Zhoushan Main Island, the sea route is the predominant line of communication connecting Zhoushan with the mainland and undertakes 90% and 60%of the total traffic volume and the passenger capacity between Zhoushan Main Island and the mainland, respectively. It is named as the Blue Highway at Sea. In recent years, with the formation of the 4-hour Economic Circle in Zhejiang province and ever developing of Zhoushan economy and increasing people's living standard, the total car and passenger load in Ya-Bai Sea Route is increasing over 10% annually. The original ferry fleet scale and operation capacity cannot meet the developing demands in the coming few years. To build new ferryboats and increase traffic capacity is imperative under the situation. However, with the coming of the year 2009, Zhoushan Crossing Sea Bridge will be put into service. The amount of cars and passengers traffic in Ya-Bai Sea Route will inevitably decrease greatly. Therefore, in order to meet the increasing demands of traffic volume in Ya-Bai Sea Route and give consideration to the surplus of the original traffic capacity after the year 2009, the building of new ferryboats needs to be justified economically for practical demands for developing the new routes. The thesis is mainly divided into four parts. Firstly, the certainty of ever increasing traffic load of the Ya-Bai Sea Route and the urgent demands for new ferryboats are illustrated based upon the investigation and analysis of the economic development and traffic scale status quo in Zhoushan. Secondly, the future developing scale of the ferryboat traffic volume is demonstrated through the grey prediction model based on the recent traffic development features of the Ya-Bai Sea Route. Thirdly, several optional new types of ferryboats are designed to meet the traffic features and special demands of navigation route of the Ya-Bai Sea Route. Fourthly, the above types of ferryboats are justified economically on the basis of operation. The several important parameters affecting the shipping economy are examined with the sensitivity analysis. Lastly, based on comprehensive considerations to the development status and trends of the Ya-Bai Sea Route and the results of economic demonstration, one type of ferryboat is recommended as the best ship type for increasing traffic capacity in Ya-Bai Sea Route.
