This article firstly has carried on the discrimination to the balcony concept and its connotation. Through analysis of concepts close to the balcony in traditional Chinese house, such as platform, terrace, garden and so on, the ductility and openness are the essence function characteristic of balcony. Because the multifamily housing is highly crowded, spatial seal and industrialization construction, these cause the balcony regarding to break the seal, and enhancing living environment as well as spiritual and psychological demand have specially vital significance. The function of multifamily housing balcony constitute physiological need, the psychological demand, the household combination design and the room function shift request these four aspects.Next, this article has carried on the analysis to the Chinese city multifamily housing balcony development evolution, gathered the housing balcony development China to divide into the introduction of multifamily housing balcony (1840 - 1948), the status establishment of balcony in the multifamily housing (1949-1978), the strengthening and enrichment of balcony entity function (1979-1991 ) and the multiplex development of multifamily housing balcony (1992-2005) four stages. Studied has affected the factors which the balcony evolved, there are four aspects: the economical development the housing area standard, social vicissitude and the housing idea, building system and technology, the housing shape and the functional space pattern.
