Based on the spot investigation and a great amount of literature ,this paper has taken qualitatively analyses for the main influential factors in urban square's function benefits and plan design and practice, and research analyses for urban square's plan design ,construction , maintenance and management .The main results as follows:(1) Urban square's functions include : political gathering ,commercial trade ,cultural recreation, plants and conformity to urban environment function .(2) The influential factors in urban square's plan design and practice include objective factors and subjective factors . The main objective factors include macroscopic aspects (social economic conditions, social cultural environment, the former natural environment and artificial environment and the city plans.) and microcosmic aspects (the characteristics and functions of the square, the location. The scale and the person-time of the square, the former condition of the square , the space layout of the square and the landscape works of the square.)The main subjective factors include : the behavior psychology of the masses, government policies, the participation of the masses , the basic quality of the designer, the constructor and the maintainer.Urban square's plan design and practice is the comprehensive result of these factors which have direct, indirect or both direct and indirect effects; and is limited by one or several elements in special conditions .(3) The basic principles of urban square's plan design: humanism, systematic principle of holding urban space system's promulgating, controling the plants area, sustained development, stressing character creating and social principle of paying more attention to the public participating.(4) The basic principles of urban square's construction, maintenance and management: timely improvement, economy, respecting technological talents, urban square's benefits include : social ,economy , landscape and ecology benefit.(5) After combine with the urban square's plan design and analyses of the practice models in Shandong province , the urban square's comprehensive evaluation and standard have been carried out, as well as plan design pattern and green pattern ( large lawn pattern , vegetable -forest meadow pattern and ecology pattern) for urban square in Shandong. It also point out the invesbment for urban square's consbrucbion, the growing thend toward maintenance,and at last conclude the methods of application of big tree in the urban square.Finally, the paper summed up the former conclusions , discussed the developing tendency of urban square and suggested that we should intensify and accomplish the researches about plan construction, ecological and land scope benefits of urban squares .
