Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation (TCSC) is a kind of FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) device. It can regulate impedance smoothly over a wide range by changing the trigger angle of thyristor. As a novel method for electrical network control, TCSC can be applied in power system transient stability enhancement, power system oscillation damping, subsynchronous resonance (SSR) mitigation and load flow control.Experimental setup has physical characteristic similar to real TCSC to a large extent, and it is not restricted by system operation condition. Also, as the control system of the TCSC experimental setup could be the same as those used in the practical power system, controllers based on various theories can be tested and the performance of them can be verified before their practical application. Consequently, it is of great importance to develop experimental setup of TCSC for the investigation of its basic operation characteristics and control strategy.This thesis focuses on development of TCSC experimental setup, including whole scheme design, system realization and test for the experimental setup of TCSC.First the application and research status of TCSC are overviewed, research background and operation principle of TCSC are introduced. In addition, the impedance regulation characteristic and the operation characteristics of TCSC under its rated operation conditions are investigated. According to the requirement of "Technical scheme of TCSC simulation system by dynamic simulation laboratory of Shandong University", considering the whole aim and reality condition of dynamic simulation laboratory, basic structure and parameters of components for main circuit are performed. Experimental setup mainly includes main circuit, signal interface, control system, protect system, data acquisition system, communication system and monitor system. Control, protect, data acquisition and communication system have been realized. Function, hardware and program of these systems are also introduced at length.Experiments on the developed TCSC experimental setup are performed.Fundamental frequency impedance step response under different synchronizing signal and transient characteristic when capacitive vernier mode and inductive vernier mode switch to each other are investigated. Further more, the mode switching process is discussed deeply.
