Series Compensation is an effective and economical means to enhance the transmission capability and improve the stability of long transmission systems. Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation (TCSC) is evolved from the conventional series compensation. With the adjustment of the thyristors, its equivalent fundamental impedance can be changed rapidly and smoothly. TCSC is able to direct power flow along the desired paths and allow the transmission capability being fully utilized. More importantly, because of its rapid and flexible regulation, it can improve transient stability and dynamic performance of the power system such as damping low-frequency oscillation, mitigation of sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) and providing voltage support as well. This thesis is devoted to the development of a TCSC experimental setup for laboratory purpose. The operation characteristics analysis of TCSC, physical system design and the tests of the experimental setup are involved. A general overview of the application of FACTS and TCSC in power system is presented first, following the introduction of the base circuit topology and the operation principle of TCSC. The fundamental impedance characteristics as well as the operation characteristics of TCSC considering constrained conditions are summarized briefly. The design and implementation of the TCSC experimental setup is presented in details. The scheme of the basic function modules, including the main controller, data acquisition card, protecting card and digital triggering card based on DSP chips, are discussed. Finally, the basic characteristics of the TCSC involving both steady and transient process are studied with the implemented experimental setup, such as the fundamental impedance characteristics, step impedance control response and transitions between inductive and capacitive reactance region and so on. Test results demonstrate the correctness and the effectiveness of the designed physical system.
