Bridge overlay is a special pavement structure, which will not only protect the bridge from damage but also act as a pavement structure for traffic. How to design appropriate overlay structure and thickness is very important for improving overlay's service lifetime and quality.With Finite Element Method, this thesis has analyzed the loading stress and temperature stress for asphalt concrete pavement and cement concrete pavement on different style of bridges. It discovers the overlay's mechanistic performance for different bridge styles. For asphalt concrete pavement, it mainly analyzes the interface shear stress and interface normal pulling stress; while for cement concrete pavement, it mainly analyzes the tensile stress in top pavement and interface stability.Also, this paper has studied the waterproof membrane on bridge decks with numerical modeling. It calculates the membrane's tensile stress induced by bridge deformation.According to the overlay's damages, it proposes the design method for overlay thickness and structure. For asphalt concrete pavement, the interface shear resistance and interface normal pulling resistance are set as design criteria; for cement concrete pavement, the tensile stress in top overlay is set as design criteria. Finally, it proposes the method for design of waterproof membrane thickness.
