With the development of our country's economy, harbor handling facility has to be fit the speedy increasing volume of cargo freight. A new round large scale port expanding is now in construction. How to achieve high port handling capacity, meet the requirement of client and build up competing ability in market with lower cost, which is all along the high light in port plan and design. In some situations, the port has to handle some freight which volume is far low away from the economy level individually in a specializing berth with high ship loading or unloading rate, however, there may be another freight in reverse flow direction which add the first reaching the economy volume for the handling facility and ship size. If we arrange this two freight loading and unloading in the same berth, and some necessary measures both in flow design and conveying equipment to be taken to avoid the pollution during conveying, the berth with combined loading and unloading system has rather better performance in much lower construction and handling equipment cost and lower manpower comparing with two individual berth in the same handling capacity, and thus a better port profit may be achieved.In this paper, I bring the combined ship loading and unloading system to the 100,OOODWT bulk berth-expanding program of LIANYUNGANG port. A combined berth possess of functions of 70,OOODWT international trade bulk coal ship loading and 100,OOODWT international trade bulk ore ship unloading, which length is within the need of ship berthing tie length by measures of making loader and unloader in one set and a reversing belt conveyor system. In a relative low investment, the imminence problem, faced by LIANYUNGANG port, of how to deal with the reverse flow direction bulk international trade coal and ore handled in high handling efficiency, huge transport ship and relatively low individual freight volume may be solved.
