In this dissertation, the basic idea, mechanical foundation of finite -element method and the theory of buckling stability analysis are expatiated in detail. The function and open style structure of the finite -element analysis software, MSC. NASTRAN, and the main features of MSC. PATRAN are concretely explained. The processes using MSC. NASTRAN to carry through strength, stiffness analysis, stability and optimum design of the gantry crane are introduced as a focal point.This paper takes the gantry crane as the object of study. After I emulated the crane with MSC. PATRAN software, comprehensive analyzing every working case, four working cases are selected to carry through strength analysis with MSC. NASTRAN software. The result shows the maximum stress and the maximum stress location and the distribution of the stress. The maximum stress attaches to 91.2 MPa. The result also shows the maximum stress value in original design is much less than the breaking point of A3. So it is necessary to optimize structure of this crane. Stability factors can be received from buckling stability analysis and meet the demand of the crane. Finally, Using MSC. NASTRAN to define design variable, determine design object and restrict constraint upper and lower limit to optimize design. We find that the maximal stress value increased. This design makes material sufficiently used, the weight of crane effectively lightened. At the same time, stress distribution is more reasonable.By MSC. NASTRAN software emulating it may save manpower and material resources and have relatively simulation precision. It is very helpful to advance the crane structure dynamics design level in engineering. It makes the crane structure more reasonable and meets demand of socialdevelopment. Through this study, we can find the function and significance of MSC. NASTRAN is showed in strength analysis and optimum design. The study method of this paper is fit to the analysis of other kinds machinery.
