There are many kinds of spectrum analyzers used to analyze vibration signals currently, but these instruments are usually big and need to be communicated with PC for fault diagnose. These are unconvenient for on site checking and measuring. These instruments are only designed for experts who have the knowledge of vibration and signal processing. This paper is aimed to develop an smart portable vibration meter, which is fit for engineers in engine room on board ship to maintain machinery everyday. The paper made a bold research into smart portable vibration meter using the technology of digital signal processing and model developing of DSP+CPLD.This paper expounded the research work of the vibration meter in three parts:Firstly, it introduced the measurement and analyse of machinery vibration signals on board ship, the actualities and development of the portable vibration meter in China and other countries were introduced, Including the research work and practical significance of our project. On top of these, the developing tools and it's design methods were also introduced.Secondly, it completed hardware design and developed software program for McBSP, DMA, FFT and interrupt service etc. by use of hardware and software resource of TMS320VC5402DSP. A filter chip MAX274 was used to design analog filter, which overcame the shortage of interfere and complex of RC filter before. Signal collection was realized by DSP's McBSP, and the data was transfered to memory data area by DSP's DMA. This ways of data transference is very suitable for FFT arithmetic. For the FFT arithmetic, we changed the FFT inputs of 2N points real numbers into N points complex numbers. The operation of FFT was cut a half and it's efficiency was increased one times refer to ordinary FFT operation by changing into FFT of N points complex numbers.Finally , a CPLD chip XC95144XL was used to design a ASIC for our system, which was applied in the control of periphery of DSP system successfully. It performed functions of memorizer coding, keyboard controlling and LCD displaying etc. The CPLD made the electric board obviously smaller and enhanced quality and reliability of the hardware design. Furthermore, the proving of many signals was solved by step by step method.
