In the impact of mechanical systems, there are two kinds of problems that people are concerned about. One is kinematics analysis, i.e., solving linear or nonlinear algebraic equations. The other refers to analyzing of the interactions between loads and system movements, namely, dynamics analysis. With deeper research of the problem, it has become more and more important to study dynamics response of multi body system during complex mechanical system impact. Car-highway concrete barrier impact was studied in this paper, and the dynamics of the car and the occupant during the impact were discussed. Study on improvements of barrier protection performance were carried out..First of all, literature review about the development of mechanical system impact dynamics was conducted, and then data of highway car-barrier impact accidents were analyzed so as to discuss the significances of car-barrier impact study.Based on the summary of car-barrier impact study at home and abroad and on computer simulations, a multi body dynamics program MADYMO was used to develop simulation model of car-concrete barrier impact. A parameter study on dynamics of the car and biomechanics response of occupant was carried out in terms of initial impact speed and impact angle of the car. The simulation result of the simulating impact system was compared with international typical tests publicly published, and showed to provide reasonable agreement with the experimental data.Improvement of barrier protection performance was analyzed from views of material, structure and type, installation of concrete barrier. It was presented to increase the protection capacity of the barrier through material improvement so as to decrease rigidity of the barrier. The effect that the height of the point of intersection between the up and below inclined plane may have on car overturn after impact.Vehicle safety improvement was discussed in this paper from vehicle safety laws and regulations and active and passive safety performances. The safety performances of car bumper and car seat were singled out for analysis.Finally, on the basis of summarizing dynamics of car and occupant and protection behavior of barriers in car-highway barrier impact, many problems and solutions confronted in the current research were presented, and the prospect and objectives of further work were also given.
