Avoiding the collision of the seagoing vessels to guarantee the safety of the navigation between the vessels are the common concerns among the people who are engaged in the technology of shipping transportation, navigation and administration. IMO has set down the 《INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS FOR PREVENTING COLLISIONS AT SEA,1972,》 especially to apply to "all vessels upon the high seas and in all waters connected therewith navigable by seagoing vessels". It's a pity that the colliding accidents between vessels increased year by year in spite of the continuous development of the modern navigation technology, orientation and navigation system as well as the seafarers quality. In order to obtain experience and learn lessons from the colliding accidents between vessels, to understand the physical process approaching mutually in the colliding accidents, to grasp the technical analysis in the process of collisions between vessels, to comprehend the quantitative division at the stages under process of the avoiding collision, the thesis devotes to the whole process of colliding accidents between two vessels under three patterns in crossing situation. On the base of summing up the advanced techniques for avoiding collision worldwide and the realization on the practice, referring to the international practice, the thesis applies to the theory and method of geometrical triangle of collision, makes use of the theory and method to calculate the critical quantitative value at every stage in the course of avoiding collision in crossing situation. The thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter, to clarify the conception of the "crossing situation", focuses on expounding the definition and the classification of the "crossing situation", including the definition of the "power-driven vessel", "course crossing", and "so as to involve risk of collision", the classification of the pattern for the crossingsituation as well, Meanwhile, the thesis puts forward the general division for the "crossing situation": such as small angle "crossing situation", abeam "crossing situation", and large angle "crossing situation". The second chapter focuses on constructing the mathematic model for avoiding collision at the "crossing situation", thus, lays a solid foundation for the quantitative analysis in the following chapters. The third chapter is the highlight of the text which focuses on the analysis of the classical colliding case at the "crossing situation", calculating the distance between two vessels in the state of" involving risk of collision", approaching a "close-quarters situation" and the "immediate danger situation" through the mathematical model, the thesis sums up the lessons and the prevention of the colliding accidents in every stage at the "crossing situation" by combining with the qualitative analysis, and puts forth a series of methods for avoiding collision aim at three different patterns at the "crossing situation". The fourth chapter focuses on expounding the issues in the process of avoiding collision at the "crossing situation", includes in analyzing the check for the validity and the inharmonic actions of avoiding collision between two vessels, so as to make the avoiding action more timely, accurate, integrated, and effective. The fifth chapter draws the conclusion, sums up the course for collision at "crossing situation", put forward the solution for it as well. Those cases that have been used in the thesis are selected from the Lloyd's reports and the report of the marine department Hong Kong, so the contents are systematic and integrated; the stuff is accurate, detailed and authoritative as well.
