At present, the maximum dry density, which is a very import parameter of the degree of compaction, is ascertained by standard indoor compaction test. This method is complicated and time-consuming. Generally, no less than one compaction test is needed for any earth sample. When the sample has a little change, it is necessary to carry out another test, which would have great influence on construction schedule. Therefore, it is urgent to study an advanced and convenient method obtaining maximum dry density in-situ.By means of data from Kai-Luo Expressway, this paper established a mathematical model of compaction function by analyzing the characteristic of compaction curve. The research presents a correlative dry density method(or XGM), which can calculate maximum dry density by field dry density. A data processing technique for compaction curve is proposed from five inspected data to nine, or three data, and application program is developed for compaction curve. In' order to verify XGM method , author went to construction sites to inspect roadbed and collect field data. The optimum compaction curve, maximum dry density are obtained by means of data processing technique, which are good consistent with indoor standard compaction test. The new method could control field construction quality effectively. Besides, it could identify the detected data with nuclear test and cutting ring test. Compared with the traditional method, this method has lots of advantages, such as convenience % time-saving and so on, which can enable us to calculate the field dry density by software when we detect field compactness. Especially it is suitable for the impure earth and large-scale earthwork project.
