Quanzhou with profound history and culture is famous for its notable features not only in China, even in the world. Recent years, during the course of development of urban economy, the historical environment of Quanzhou has been eroded and destroyed badly. Xijie Area of Quanzhou is the historical and cultural protective block of ancient city, how to resolve the contradiction between environmental reform and historical preservation is the issue being paid attention to by all walks of life in society.Starting from the city features of Quanzhou, the author analyses the regular factors of the whole environment of Quanzhou ancient city, and then puts forward that architecture and city space of Quanzhou have small scale and active pattern feature and development mechanism under the influence of special background of geography, history and humanism, at the same time, the thesis combines with the practicing experiences and lessons of ancient city reform and protective research, put forwards that Xijie Area should follow the organic renewal rule of city in history and adopt appropriate method of small scale and active pattern renewal and preservation for the aims of improving people living environment quality, preserving blocks?historical environment and features and forming rgnic renewal?benign cycle of blocks. Finally, the thesis preliminarily demonstrates the adaptability of small scale and active pattern renewal and preservation mode in Xijie Area on the basis of researching and analyzing the specific conditions in Xije Area further.The thesis is generally divided into five chapters. In chapter I , the author introduces the research motive, aims, objects, range and methods briefly. In chapter II , the author reviews the domestic and foreign theory and practice about renewal and preservation of historical and cultural blocks. In chapter LII, the author analyses the small scale and active pattern feature of the development of architecture and city space in Quanzhou ancient city. In chapter LV, on the basis of researching and analyzing the specific conditions in Xije Area, the author preliminarily demonstrates the adaptability of small scale and active pattern renewal and preservation mode in Xijie Area through small range design. In chapter V , the author concludes the outcomes achieved by the thesis research.
