Research On Health-oriented Urban Waterfront Spatial Pattern

Cities develop rapidly under the fast urbanization progress. But the development of blind pursuit of economic growth means that Humanity's livelihood urban environment is now facing serious challenges, leading to the unhealthy citizens who are subject to disease threats from both physical and psychological aspects. The concept of modern urban construction should take the healthy survival and development of human being as the trend. Waterfront area has unique natural advantages to promote people's physical and mental health, and it is the best pilot of building a healthy city. Being paid increasingly attention to by the public, government and developers, the waterfront space design should seek guidance of a sustainable concept. And the research of health-oriented urban waterfront spatial pattern has important significance.With urban waterfront as the research object, taking the spatial form promoting human healthy behavior as the starting point, this thesis explored the health-oriented waterfront space characteristics, composition logic and organization laws on the urban design level. Paper firstly reviewed the theories of international health & healthy city planning and the related research of waterfront development and construction, analyzed the concepts of health-oriented and spatial pattern, and then put forward that the health-oriented waterfront spatial pattern should promote people to reach the waterfront and do healthy activities on the basis of the link between human health and waterfront spatial form. Meanwhile, clearing the existing unhealthy problems of urban waterfront, the paper pointed out that the design goals of the health-oriented waterfront spatial form. Secondly, from the perspective of people-oriented, the paper discussed the form features and organization laws of the waterfront spatial elements under three selected functions which closely related with the citizens'health as business, residential and recreational by studying the healthy needs and behavior tends of different service populations. Paper then used the analytical method as"figure and ground relationship", summarized abundant successful waterfront cases, and advanced seven health-oriented urban waterfront spatial pattern modes such as the core type, the extended type, the hybrid type, the enclosure type, the splattering enclosure type, the serial type, and the giant construction type. Based on the spatial pattern study, the thesis further indicated that the health-oriented waterfront spatial pattern should follow the common design rules to ensure the effectiveness of public health promotion, which mainly included the design principles as openness, accessibility, continuity, hydrophilic and diversity and eight design points raised for the specific form elements like water, roads, buildings, lawns, squares, embankments, bridges and so on.
