After the reform and opening up, commodity economy has been developing rapidly in China and the constructions of the cities have been carrying out constantly. The old commercial blocks have been remediated and updated and the new ones have been emerging continuously. In this process, contradictions have become increasingly prominent: the thinking of the designers has been out of date, they have idolized the western design philosophy. At the same time, the governments have pursued the economic interests unilaterally and the commercial blocks have been too large and too fast. In addition with the impact of globalization, the regional characteristics of the commercial blocks have been disappearing rapidly. It is the consequences that the natural environment has been destructed, the social context has been divided, people have adapted to the environment passively, and they could not interact with the environment because the demands of their mentality, emotion and spirit could not be meted. With the functional diversity and the increasing importance of the commercial blocks, the old design methods have been out of date and re-emphasizing the regional characteristics has become current ideological trend.First of all, papers begins with the basic knowledge of commercial pedestrian blocks: there were many regional characteristics in their own origins and they formed their own patterns, appearances and cultural connotations. Setting the design principles, through the connecting of theory and practice, qualifies regional design and guide its direction. The elements of the commercial blocks are the vectors of regional design and the medias from theory to reality. This section is the base of the later ones.Next, using from-the-general-to-the-particular method, I research the theories and the practices of the regional design in commercial pedestrian blocks. Firstly, I point the big challenges regional design need meet and demonstrate its importance and necessity. Second, I study the original classical theory and construct the regional design system for commercial pedestrian blocks from natural, social angles and person's point of view. Third, I study and classify the elements of three subsystems. Connecting with the commercial blocks'components which the first section summarizes, I describe the situation of regional design in commercial pedestrian blocks, using Examples France. Finally, exampling three typical commercial pedestrian blocks in the city of Suzhou, I analyze and evaluate the usage of their own regional design, summarize their own advantages and identified weaknesses and deficiencies. Through this process, I provide an idea for the futural regional design in commercial pedestrian blocks. And to the regional design in commercial blocks of other regions, it also has reference sense.
