As cities undergo a lot construction in recent years, the damages and accidents to the ground surface and buildings caused by tunnel construction happen frequently. So it is worthwhile to study on how to determine deformation controlling standards before construction, to assess potential damages to the buildings caused by tunnel construction and to propose relevant risk controlling measures. After reading a lot of journals published at home and abroad, books about building damages and looking at measures on field investigations, the paper has conducted researches on the damages and risk assessment on buildings caused by tunnel construction by collecting building damages accident cases caused by surface deformation and ground settlement accidents cases caused by tunnel construction. The main ideas are as follows:(1) The paper collects 28 cases of building damages caused by tunnel excavation and 172 cases caused by surface deformation. The paper also collects and analyzes engineering cases from the perspectives of building structure type, basic type, length to height ratio, building settlement, partial inclination, overall inclination, crack damage level, inclination damage level and so on.(2) The paper conducts statistical analysis about the building damage accidents and research on resistance capacity of different buildings. The paper provides basic statistics for damage assessment of buildings and deformation controlling standards caused by tunnel construction by establishing relationship between controlling parameters of building settlement and deformation reaction features and the damage levels.(3) The paper collects thirty six cases of surface excessive settlements caused by tunnel construction and analyzes those cases from the perspectives of geological conditions of the accident sections, excavation span, tunnel depth, accident situations and the main reasons leading to accidents. The paper analyzes and summarizes reasons leading to accidents and influential elements so as to provide building damage and risk controlling measures for accidents caused by tunnel construction.(4) The paper analyzes experience of determining calculation parameters in the surface displacement formula at home and broad, summarizes the damage and deformation controlling indicators, takes vulnerability index of buildings into consideration, and amends some deformation controlling indicators. As a result, the paper establishes a risk assessment system about building damages caused by tunnel construction, puts forward correspondent risk controlling measures targeting at building damage levels which will be applied in the damage and risk assessment in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan intercity tunnel construction.
