In this paper, two series thirteen kinds of complexes were synthesized in ethanolic-water system using 2- hydroxy -4- methoxy benzophenone(HMPB) and 2-hydroxy-4-n-octyloxybenzophenone (HOPB) as the ligands respectively, reacting with metal chlorid. These complexes include the chelates of La(MBP)3,Sm(MBP)3,Eu(MBP)3,Gd(MBP)3,Tb(MBP)3,Dy(MBP)3,Co(MBP)3,Ni(MBP)3,La(OBP)3,Sm(OBP)3,Gd(OBP)3,Co(OBP)3,Ni(OBP)3. Four of these compounds have not been reported, which are Co(MBP)3,Ni(MBP)3,Co(OBP)3,Ni(OBP)3.The compounds have been characterized and analyzed by elemental analyses, infrared spectrum and mass spectrum. The solubility, electronic absorption spectrum and thermal stability have been studied. The solubility of these complexes in ordinary solvent were discussed. The solubility of these thirteen complexes are over 15 mg/mL in the different solvent such as benzene, chloroform, tetrahydrofuran(THF)and mixed solvents of CHCl3 and TFP (CHCl3: TFP =6:4)The UV–VIS spectrum of synthesized compounds gives the electronic absorption spectra in the 300–360 nm range. And, the influence and rules of the different ligands, the species of solvent, central metal ions and the concentration of solution on the location of maximum absorption of the above compounds were discussed too.TG curves of weight loss for the complexes do not show any mass loss up to 240℃, these indicate that all of the complexes synthesized have good thermal stability.
