Technologies of insensitive initiating devices have been being studied to solve problems of existing weapons in safety and reliability. This paper represents an investigation on the technologies of the insensitive initiating devices on the basis of analyses of their development domestically and abroad. The investigation is mainly involved with the following aspects.(1) The technologies of the insensitive initiating devices were analyzed, the insensitive performance of special-shaped metal film bridges analyzed, and insensitive electric igniter squibs with the special-shaped metal film bridges designed and made. The theoretic analysis and numerical calculation can be divided into three points:First, the design and calculation of the parameters with the special-shaped metal film bridges;Second, the design and calculation of the parameters with the electric insensitive igniter squib; andThird, the calculation of the thermal performance of the special-shaped metal film bridge.By designing the special-shaped metal film bridge and combining with designing the whole structure of the electric igniter squib, the electric igniter squib has met the insensitive performance requirement that it does not fire under 107℃/12h1A1W5min and the requirements of three protections resistant to stray current, static electricity and radiofrequency.(2) Proof tests for safety, reliability and functioning time and tests for three protections resistant to stray current, static electricity and radiofrequency have been carried out. The testing results show that the insensitive performance, reliability and functioning time of the designed electric insensitive igniter squib with the special-shaped metal film bridge and ability for the three protections resistant to stray current, static electricity and radiofrequency can meet the requirements of the "A" class in GJB344-87 titled General Design Criterion for Insensitive Electric Initiators.(3) The sensitivity performances of the initial agent and the squibs have been studied. The results show that the initial agents have a large influence on the sensitivity of the squibs. The initial agent has reasonably been selected to use by both theoretical analyses and proof tests. A kind of pure-substance primary explosive listed in the military weapon inventory has been selected to use as the initial agent. The results of the sensitivity testing by the up-and-down method shows that the sensitivity performance of the squibs corresponds to a normal distribution, meanwhile, the maximum firing current and minimum no-firing current have been obtained by calculation and their firing performance has been proofed.
