Tianjin Modern Clothing Of - 1840-1919

Tianjin is a famous city with long history and old culture in China. After the year 1861, it became an epitome of semicolonial, semi-feudal society for Modern History of China because of its special location in our country. Costume and decoration, as one of the most sensitive factors that are changed with the development of reformation of the society, also well records the process of this transmutation. It's easy to understand that when the cultural ideality is changed, it must be followed by the changes of some concrete form and factors in that society, like the popular notion of aesthetic judgment, the philosophy and Economy, etc. Studying the Modern Fashion Culture of Tianjin means to open a window through which we can probe the inner characters of Modern History and culture of China. In this dissertation, it is studied that the development and background of Fashion Culture and the reasons for the formation of this Fashion Culture from 1840 to 1919, according to a large number of historical material and pictures from collectors and libraries.Firstly, the environments and circumstances are introduced in detail. This is the first part of the dissertation.Secondly, the Fashion Culture of Tianjin is studied. Only considered with a certain group of human being, can fashion be unique and valuable. This relation make it possible for costume to be different among different levels and hereditary. To clarify the transmutation process of various costumes, this dissertation introduced four main parts: men's, women's, children's and formal dress. In time sequence, each part is discussed from costume and decoration to fair style in different periods according to the corresponding materials and pictures from collectors and libraries. Simultaneously, each part is also compared with the fashion style of other culture centers, such as Shanghai and Peking. From the study on several aspects of this section, the local character of fashion culture of Tianjin in this period can be distinguished. This is Part II,III and IV.Finally, reasons for the formation of Fashion Culture in Tianjin are analyzed from the following five main aspects: Chinese Native Culture, the Government Policy, the Capitalistic Culture, the development of Economy and the Local Customs and Beliefs in Tianjin. This is the fifth part of the dissertation.
