Abstract/Summary:
In the process of interpersonal communication, most of information is transmitted in nonverbal ways. More and more researchers have begun to pay close attention to the nonverbal factors in communication. When it comes to the intercultural communication(IC), nonverbal communication(NVC) occupies important position in particular. The political and diplomatic field is an typical context of IC. In today’s international political arena, more and more women are appearing in public, blowing up a pink whirlwind, which is overturning the man-dominating tradition. Political heroines have become a beautiful view with their distinctive outlook on the international political stage. It is no doubt that their apparels and accessories(A&A) is one attraction in them. Apart from the function of appearance beautification, their A&A also display rich implied meanings. What these political women wear is a successful application of object language(OL), which is of high IC value. Each element in dressing can reflect the wearer’s background information, preferences, personality traits and native cultural connotation from the clothing styles, materials, pattern to the color. By observing the A&A, we can get much nonverbal information. This thesis selects some A&A of the representative political females on today’s international political stage as the research data. By applying the main theories of IC and those of other relevant disciplines, including the theory of dress language symbol system in semiotics, and the feminine theory and the halo effect theory in psychology, the data collected are classified in the aspects of style, material, pattern and color; and then the similarities, differences and general rules in choosing dressing styles are analyzed and induced. Then, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the OL applications of political females are interpreted respectively and their OL communicative effects are discussed and evaluated. Finally, the corresponding suggestions for effective application of OL are offered.Compared with previous relevant researches, this thesis lays stress on cultural connotation of A&A OL and enriches the research of nonverbal OL in IC from an interdisciplinary perspective, which is the originality of this study.
