In recent years, as the result of the rapid development of economy and the improvement of people’s living standard, the motor vehicles of the Guanzhong region are increasing rapidly. At the same time, the Guanzhong region is experiencing serious compound air pollutions. Various pollutants from motor vehicle exhaust enter the body through the respiratory track, finally cause great harm to human health. So, how to identify the emission characteristics and its spatial and temporal distributions, and to make reasonable strategy to control motor vehicle emissions has become a challenging problem in the Guanzhong region. An inventory of motor vehicle emissions is a collection of motor vehicle pollution information of all kinds of pollutants. As a basic reference to formulate environmental policy for the local environmental departments and the governments, the inventory plays an important role in evaluating the air quality and making effective pollution control strategies. This study established a detail inventory of motor vehicle emissions of the Guanzhong region, Shanxi, China. The inventory includes the simulation of the vehicle emission factors, the calculation of vehicle emission inventory, the establishment of spatial and temporal distributions for vehicle emissions. Firstly, an vehicle emission model named as MOVES was introduced to simulate the motor vehicle emission factors; Secondly, the vehicle emission inventory based on data of the Guanzhong region in 2012 was established. The total emissions of PM2.5, PM10, NOX, THC, CO, VOC, NH3 and SO2 of vehicles in the Guanzhong region were 0.41×104t, 0.55×104t, 8.19×104t, 5.24×104t, 45.4×104t, 4.1×104t, 0.1×104t, 0.42×104t, respectively. The characteristics of vehicle emission vary among different cities in study area, vehicles of Xi’an have great contributions to the PM; Vehicles used gasoline as power are the main sources of CO and VOC, while the vehicles used diesel as power make the signification distributions to the NOX and PM; Thirdly, the spatial and temporal distributions of vehicular pollutants in the Guanzhong region were established by introduced the GIS-based road network. The results showed that the air pollutants coming from vehicles were mainly distributed over the central area of cities.
