The dissertation is based on two research projects, the one is The NationalBasic Research Program (Project 973 ) named as "Basic studies on formationmechanism and economic exploitation of coalbed methane(CBM) reservoir inChina"(2002CB211702), and the other is The China Geological Survey Programnamed as "Comprehensive Assessment of CBM Resources in Middle-highMetamorphic Zone, North China"(200210100004). In the research, a newassessment method based on GIS is first applied to the assessment of the CBM inNorth-China. With the essential functional components of geographic information systems(GIS), such as the geospatial data management, the special data manipulation andanalysis, diversity of computer graphics output, it is far-reaching that the GISapplied to the resources assessment of CBM. In this dissertation, we introduce theGIS and the fuzzy mathematics comprehensive assessment. And then a newassessment method was put forward by using the method of fuzzy mathematic andstacking analysis. In this paper, due to the distinguished conditions in North-China, theassessment mainly relied on six coal-bearing basin(areas), including Qinshui basinof Shanxi Province, Pingdingshan coal mining area, Anhe coal mining area,Xinggong coal mining area, Jiaozuo coal mining area and Yongxia coal miningarea of Henan Province. Three factors are considered during the assessment of theCBM: 1. the coal geological characteristics, including the thickness of coal, thestability of coal seam, the rank of coal metamorphism and the ingredient, etc; 2.the reservoir conditions, including the gas content, the porosity, the permeability, etc.; 3. the trapping conditions, including burial depth, the roof and the floor of thecoal seam, the tectonic characteristics and the hydrologic characteristics, etc. Atthe same time, not only the in-place CBM resources and the resources abundancein the research area are calculated, but also several favorable zones have beenforecasted by using the GIS-based CBM resources assessment system.
