Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan are abound in coal and coalbed methane resourceand have wide exploitation foreground. But there are few studies of coalbed methanegeology. The paper is basic on the project named Oversea coalbed methane ResourceEvaluation and Key Favorable Areas Research.Tunguska Basin, Lena Basin, Kuznetsk Basin, Pechora Basin, Donetsk Basin,Lvov-Volyn basin, Dnieper basin, Karaganda basin, Ekibastus basin are studied inthis paper, which occupies20.25%of the world coal reserves. The research contentsincluding geology background, coal reservoir conditions, gas content and storageconditions, coal and coalbed methane resources.Basic on the coalbed methane geology conditions of Russia, Ukraine andKazakhstan, an evaluation system is established. The evaluation system is includingfour first level evaluation indicators and ten second Level evaluation indicators. Firstlevel evaluation indicators are coal seem condition, gas-bearing, storage conditions,coal and coalbed methane resources. Second level evaluation indicators include coalseam accumulated thickness, ash, lithotype, gas content, coal rank, depth, roof type,tectonic conditions, coalbed methane resource abundance and coal accumulationdensity. Weights of evaluation indicators are determined by analytic hierarchy process.coalbed methane resources of nine basins are evaluated basic on this evaluationsystem. The result shows that Kuznetsk basin, Donetsk basin, Ekibastus basin havethe most coalbed methane development potential.Basic on the formation, tectonic and coalbed methane geology conditions, thefavorable coalbed methane development area are Yerunakovo district in Kuznetskbasin, The wing of main anticline, red Donetsk district, southeast of Red Army districtin Donetsk basin, central district of Ekibastus basin. Those districts are the preferredregion for coalbed methane exploration.
