The storage and manipulation of spatial data in GIS is not only a problem need to be solved imperatively but also an important part of Digital Earth and spatial data sharing. This paper has discussed something about this problem and the contents can be stated as follows. First, the viewpoint that the storage and manipulation of spatial data is necessary has been concluded from the analyses of the necessity of data distribution, combining with the specialty of spatial data. Then, the paper has summarized and concluded the methods of building Distributed Database System. Meanwhile, it has analyzed the techniques and theories of manipulation of spatial data that has developed for a long time. The two key techniques cited above have been taken as important clues that lead to an absorbing scheme of building Distributed Spatial Database System. Moreover, the tentative plans about division of spatial data and visiting of Distributed Spatial Database have been brought forward. The paper also discussed some problems involved such as distributed object technique, designs for Distributed Database, realization of distributed spatial data engine, building of spatial index, optimizing of data transferring in networks and so on. Finally, a Distributed Spatial Database System, all the DBS in which have same configurations, has been put up basing on Oracle9i, after investigating and summarizing above theories. Results of the test and ideas for more developments of spatial data's distributing storage and manipulation have been presented at the end of this paper.
