At present, with the extensive use of innovative and high technologies in the military, all the armies around the world are trying to build a digitized battlefield as an important part of their own military construction. In this paper, the military geographic elements of Joint Operation Command and the critical technologies of the spatial database engine (SDE) are researched. And therefore, in order to fit the characteristics of the Joint Operation Command, we design a Military GeoSpatial Database Engine (MG_SDE).The major contents and innovations are as follows:Firstly, to study and understand the current situation of the spatial database engine, which mainly includes the basic concepts and functions of the SDE, research content of the SDE, and some typical products of the SDE recently.Secondly, to research the military geographic data model of the Joint Operation Command for resolving the problem of inconsistent data format within the Army, navy and air forces in the Joint Operation. The major jobs are analyzing military geographic elements which take effect on the Joint Operation Command Campaign, and classifying and coding them on the basis of "classification and coding of elements of military basic geographic information".Thirdly, to research the critical technologies of the military geospatial database engine. At the first, we present the spatial data model of the MG_SDE though studying some typical spatial data models at present; at the second, we put forward the spatial data index method of the MG_SDE by researching the spatial index technology; and then we design the spatial data storage of MG_SDE; at the end, on the consideration of the sensitivity and confidentiality of military data, the spatial data security access is studied.Fourthly, to design and implement the test system of the MG_SDE. The main designs are the function, architecture, data access objects of the MG_SDE test system, and some basic data structures. Finally, the test system is demonstrated.
