Objective:Through the evaluation study of construction achievements of a part of biological disciplines on research fields, academic teams, academic leaders, research projects, research achievements, personnel training and academic exchanges on years of 2001-2005, to probe into the characteristics and problems in a part of biological disciplines of universities and colleges in our country, to provide scientific references on the management of some key biological disciplines, thus promoting the construction and development of national key disciplines in our universities and colleges.Study objects:27 biological national key disciplines (groupⅠ) examined and evaluated by Ministry of Education on 2007.Research data and sources:1. Data came from the "national key disciplines construction summary table" and the "final report of the national key disciplines construction" filled out by biological national key disciplines candidates (groupⅠ) on the year of 2007, the evaluation time is defined as Jan 1,2001 to 2005 Dec 31.2. Data of total number of papers published and citation number of 2001-2005 in the department of physiology, Peking University was from web of science database.Methods:1. Documents retrieval:including paper documents and electronic document retrieval methods.2. Comparison method:construction effects of 13 first class disciplines and 14 second class disciplines of national key disciplines of biology were compared respectively.3. Qualitative data and statistical analysis of quantitative data:analysis of discipline ranking index of national key disciplines of biology (groupⅠ), quantitative data of figures, tables and statistical analysis was used.4. Case study method:national key disciplines of biology (groupⅠ) evaluated on 2007 were used as research cases, data was gathered through various channels, aggregated and cross analyzed.Results:1. The funds distribution of the first class national key disciplines was different significantly from the second class disciplines. The funding amount of first class national key disciplines funded by "211 project", "985 project", the state special construction funds was much higher than the second class national key disciplines.2. First class national key disciplines of biology (groupⅠ) have 4.23 mean research fields, mean research fields of second class national key disciplines was 4.57. 3. First class national key disciplines of biology (groupⅠ) lack academic leaders who lead the team fight crucial battle, professional title distribution of second class national key disciplines showed a "concave" type.4. The ability of undertaking major research projects of first class national key disciplines is better than second class national key disciplines. The quality of SCI papers produced by first class national key disciplines was significantly higher than the second class disciplines, but the number of papers published on "science", "Nature" and other top academic journals was small and unstable. Although the second class national key disciplines produced higher number of SCI papers, but due to the impacts of input of funds, human resources investment, regional economy, achieving major research results breakthrough still need a long time.5. The number of papers published in SCI per graduate student in first class national key disciplines was 3.58, higher significantly than the number of papers published in SCI per graduate student in second class national key disciplines, which was 1.58 per student.6. In 5 years, national key disciplines of biology (groupⅠ) carried out academic exchange and cooperative research with some of the leading universities in the United States, France, Switzerland, Singapore and other countries and regions, and WHO, United Nations Population Fund, the World Bank and other international organizations, of which collaborative research projects was 37; organized 53 domestic and international academic conferences, was invited to report on the international conferences 60 times. Second class national key disciplines carried out academic exchange and cooperative research with some of the leading universities and international organizations, of which collaborative research projects was 56; organized 40 domestic and international academic conferences, was invited to report on the international conferences 68 times.Conclusions:1. Construction achievements of a part of national key disciplines of biology were obvious, major research projects, SCI papers and national science and technology awards played a key supporting role in the construction of national key disciplines. Personnel training is the basic social functions of a part of national key disciplines of biology, the internationalization is an important direction of academic exchanges of a part of national key disciplines of biology.2. Problems were obvious during the construction of a part of national key disciplines of biology. The relative lack of research funding is seriously restricting the development of national key disciplines, particularly the secondary class national key disciplines. Lacking young and middle-aged top talents was a major restriction factor of a part of national key disciplines of biology.Suggestions: 1. Persist in the development consideration of first class discipline, effectively enhance the core competitiveness of the national key disciplines.2. Further increasing the special funds on the construction of national key disciplines.3. Optimization of academic faculty construction, strengthen the "transmission" of academic leaders, train talents of high quality.4. Aim at the major projects, try to get the major achievement of high level.5. Further enhancing the international academic exchanges.Innovation points of this study:Methods combined quantitative and qualitative means were used to carry out comparison research on a part of biological national key disciplines (groupⅠ), countermeasures and suggestions were put forward accordingly.Blueprint for further study:Qualitative and quantitative research on the effectiveness of other national key disciplines, improve the recommendations of construction of national key disciplines through disciplines comparison.
