This paper evaluates the economic and social benefits of land use in Alar and Awat between 1990 and 2008 with relative approach degree method and coordination functions. Comparative analysis has been conducted.Vector maps in both regions are illustrated with ENVI and ARCGIS, based on Landsat TM Images in 1990, 2000 and 2008; related modules are used to execute the functions of area statistics and overlays to all kinds of land use types in both regions; land use patterns and transfer matrix are achieved in the three periods. Finally, land use value losses of ecological service functions in both regions are calculated; economic-ecological benefits are compared and analyzed. The major findings are as follows:(1) Economic benefit of land use in Alar has been gradually increasing during the study period; social benefit fluctuates, while with a descending trend in overall. After 2004, social benefit increases year by year. As a result of focusing on economic development over the years, social factors such as insurance and equity, which matters with life quality, are relatively lagged, causing that benefits of eco-social system fluctuate as social benefit, with a downward trend in overall. However, gap between the benefits of economic system and social system is reducing, coordinating degree of eco-social system increasing.(2) Awat relies on agriculture before 1995. The main input was on agriculture, and agricultural output increased obviously as the input intensified, by showing that economic benefit increased faster. After 1995, along with the industrial structure adjustment, industrial and services output had been increasing slower, causing the economic benefit has been lagging around a certain level, and started to decline after 2005 as the loss of industrial enterprises. Social benefit of land use in this county has gradually increased slowly during the study period, no major fluctuations were detected, which is inseparable with its distribution system and the development of social security.(3) Comparison found that economic benefit and coordination in Alar is higher than Awat, but social benefits, which is related to living, is lower.(4) Land use patterns bring economic booms in both regions, meanwhile leading to ecological environment deterioration: shrinkage of wetlands, degradation of forest and grassland, increase of unusable land such as wasteland, alkaline land, threatening the safety and stability of the local ecological system. According to the comparison, average economic-ecological benefit in Awat is higher before 2000, however, after 2000, economic - ecological benefit is higher in Alar. |
