Abstract/Summary:
Food is the foundation for human's living and development. Food security especially grain security is the major priority to every country of the world. Food security has many levels, including production, supply, trade and consumption, the basis of them is grain productivity. Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. Agriculture and food security are the major priorities in most of the APEC member economies. Due to its key position in the global grain supply and demand system, to study the issues of grain productivity and food security will show great significance in optimizing the supply and demand relationship, enhancing international technical cooperation, and contributing experience to diminish world food insecurity.Comprehensive grain productivity is composed of grain productivity potential and real grain production, the mutual transformation between them can take place when human activities changed. Food security is mainly expressed by grain production and population carrying. Concerning the issues of grain productivity and food security, the study has conducted the following works:1.Using the mechanism method, to calculate the productivity potential of light, temperature, precipitation and soil in APEC region regressively.2. Setting up index system, to evaluate the food security level in each APEC member economies. The results show that:1.The areas with high land productivity potential mainly distributed in low latitudes. Elevation, terrain, and hydrothermal condition are the major factors that affecting land productivity potential.2. The overall grain production potential of APEC region reaches as high as 1.7 billion ton. Compared with the real grain production of 1.1 billion ton, there is possibility for all the economies to increase their production.3.The food security level in each economy is differed greatly. Economies with high grain production, high population capacity, and high productivity potential, have got the relatively high security level, such as the U.S.,Australia. Vice versa, Economies like Japan and Korea should pay more attention to their food insecurity situation.Comprehensive grain productivity includes the mutual transformation between grain productivity potential and real grain production. In the final part of the study, the author takes the data envelopment analysis to evaluate the land use efficiency of each economy. It can help to find the reasons that cause low grain output, then to put forward suggestions in increasing grain production, accelerating the transformation from productivity potential to real production, improving land use efficiency. Analysis shows that:sufficient cultivated land area can guarantee high grain yield; unreasonable agriculture input will cause low land use efficiency.
