Cities are not only the main places for commodity consumption, but also the key area for colleting and distributing goods. With sustained development of the economy, physical distribution plays more and more important role in socioeconomic development. At the present time, urban physical distribution is listed as one of the most significant industries by many international central cities. Similarly, a number of cities in China are considering modern physical distribution as a new point for economic growth and they are also making some correspoing development plannings to it. It is believed that modern physical distribution is becoming the strong impetus for socioeconomic development in China. During the process of urban physical distribution development, accelerating the planning and construction is of great significance. The district development is crucial for promoting the physical distribution techniques and service, improving the investment environment, assisting the physical distribution corporation and third-party, relieving the current transportation pressure and making better the natural environment. However, various problems occur in the construction of the district, such as the imbalance between plans and market demands, the high vacancy rate, the impractical pursuit for large scale construction. In addition, some districts tend to illegally enclose lands and lack in the overall planning, market rules and mechanism, fundamental research and intellectual property protection. This paper is aimed at expounding the basic concepts, functions, development trends, features and operating mode of physical distribution districts. After the comparison with some other districts, home and abroad, the paper points out the imperfection and perplexity in Lanzhou physical distribution district. The case study of Lanzhou Overland Freight Trading Center maks some empirical analysis of Lanzhou physical distribution district and results in some suggestions and strategies on promoting the district.
