With the gradual diversification and personalization of consumer demand, and the gradual development towards the multi-species, single-piece and small batch production, the proportion of these kinds of enterprises is also expanding constantly in large and medium state-owned Chinese enterprises. Product design, as the production basis in an enterprise in terms of purchasing, production and marketing, plays an important role. During the process of product design, 80% of the production cost will be determined, the quality of product design will have an impact on the following production, and the ways and means of product design will be the main yardstick to represent the comprehensive enterprise competitiveness under the backdrop of increasingly intense market competition. By adopting modular design pattern, more diversified, small batch and personalized production can be realized, the cost of product design and the complexity of product can be reduced, and the and the efficiency of product design,innovative capability and the enterprise market responsiveness can be improved.The basic objects in this paper are single-piece and small batch manufacturing enterprises, firstly summarizing a number of advanced methods of product design, and the basic concepts and research situation of modular design. Based on the analysis of enterprise design information and the necessity of information model, some common techniques of enterprise information modeling will be introduced, and some data models related to design activities will be given out. According to the features of production management of single-piece and small batch manufacturing enterprises, some key issues like the reconfigurable modular design principle, the module division method in the process of configuration design based on the reconfigurable modular design approach are specified; the STEP Standards and IDEF1x information modeling theory are studied in detail; an integration framework using PLM as a management tool is constructed, and then the integration of key system technologies is achieved. Finally develop an advanced and practical product design prototype system based on modular method in products of single-piece and small batch manufacture, make an analysis of the core requirements,functional structure design and the division of functional module of the prototype system, build an intact information database, thus verify the practicality of the mentioned method of modular design and necessity of information modeling.
