The Research On United Technologies Corporation's R&D Management

Entering 21st century, the science and technology will be developed more and more faster, and competition among the businesses is becoming more and more crueler. Companies are paying more attentions to their R&D capabilities to sustain their core competitiveness and their competitive position in the market. Compared with those transnational companies, many Chinese companies are weaker in R&D capability and investment to R&D. In the past several years, many transnational companies have set up their R&D centers in China and recruited many local talents. This is a warning sign to us, and we should study and analyze the condition, and keep up with them, or we will loss our competitiveness in 21st century.This thesis analyzed the R&D status of our domestic companies, and the problems we faced from a high level. Then it introduced several typical R&D management structures. Also it introduced the R&D management modes in General Electric and MicroSoft as examples. The disadvantages and advantages of these R&D management styles were also analyzed.After that, the thesis introduced the R&D management in R&D projects conducting process of United Technologies in detail. It analyzed the operation system of United Technologies Research Center, the control of the R&D projects, and performance assessment in the Research Center. Then it analyzed the problems United Technologies is facing in R&D aspect and gave a list of suggestions based on the analysis.Lastly, based on the introduction and analysis of good R&D management styles of those transnational companies, it summarized several revelatory conclusions. And it gave some practical and constructive suggestions to our companies in R&D management. Hope these suggestions can help our companies to learn after foreign companies, to get their own competitiveness and to earn their market share in 21st century.
