Land is the essential resource for human's existence and development; it is an important foundation to realize sustainable development of human society. But with the development of society and economy and the rapid development of urbanization, the demand for non-agricultural construction land becomes increased, resulting in substantial loss of arable land and sharp contradiction between people and land. Coupled with limited land resource, as well as high degree of difficulty of reserve land resource, for the sake of solving problem, internal potential of land and intensive use of land is in need.Because of the form and development of rural settlements are spontaneous, and the current use of rural settlements lack of uniform planning, consequently most villages are confused in lower utilization of land use, village layout orderless, land is more extensive, such as a serious problem.In such a situation, the state proposed the thoughts of connecting the increase of urban construction land with the decrease of rural construction land to harmonize construction land in urban and rural areas. Therefore, the intensive use of land in rural settlements is of great significance, and with aggravation of human-land conflict, the intensive utilization of rural settlements becomes a focus of attention.However, the past researches focused mostly in intensive use of urban construction land, and the researches on rural settlements are often considered superficially or only from a single point of view, which are lack of in-depth research and analysis.Is it necessary to use rural settlements land intensively? How to bring forth the possibility? Do planning, legal system, economic conditions and other factors affect intensive utilization of rural settlements land? And how they affect? How to build a scientific evaluation system to assess intensive rural settlements land effectively? With these questions, according to the line of presenting, analyzing and solving the problem, combination of research data, substantial literature on the inductive analysis, preliminary theoretical framework of rural residential land use. Including the definition of basic concepts, the contraction of indicator system, the selection of evaluation method, and preliminary build technical support of the ways on rural residential land use evaluation based on GIS-assisted. The thesis stars with foundation of actual research, studying on the case of intensive utilization of rural residential land of township class in Jinan city. After the evaluation, we can conclude that the rural residential land use in Jinan city has the features such as lower utilization of land in village, the common situation of idle and vacant, the confused distribution of village etc. In response to these features, the thesis proposed corresponding countermeasures and suggestions, which has important practical significance in the guidance of intensive and rational use of the rural settlements.
