A Study On The Inter-industry Technology Spillover Of FDI And The Growth Of Industrial Productivity In Guangdong

Many countries strive to attract FDI and the strong incentive for this is the possible existence of FDI technology spillovers.FDI technology spillover divides into inner-industry and inter-industry.Nowadays,In contrast to earlier literature,which focused on intra-industry spillovers from FDI,this study aims to investigate technology spillovers operating through industry linkages.The creative parts in this thesis can be summarized as followings.Theoretically, there are two main points which can be summed up here.Firstly,the concepts of FDI technology spillovers and inter-industry technology spillovers are clarified,and the basic approaches of technology spillovers and the related factors which influence technology spillover are also defined.Secondly,some domestic and overseas literatures about technology spillovers operating through industry linkages from FDI,their theoretical and empirical research are summarized.Empirically,based on the metric model that construct from the existing studies,the thesis analyzes inter-industry technology spillovers from FDI in Guangdong's industry.Firstly,the productivity,technical efficiency and technical progress of sectors which include domestic industry or state-owned industrial are measured by the Malmquist productivity index based on the DEA.Secondly,by controlling the R&D,this study tests for the presence of FDI intra-industry spillovers and inter-industry spillovers.We find positive productivity spillovers from FDI taking place through backward and forward linkages;they only are associated with domestic-market-oriented FDI and non-state-owned enterprises but not export-market-oriented FDI and state-owned enterprises.We also find negative spillovers from FDI occurring through horizontal channel;they are not associated with state-owned enterprises in monopoly industries.
