The construction of port is the fund-intensive project. The failure of planning would bring the enormous waste to the society. As the hinterland is place where goods consume and produce, the development of port is closely related with it. For port, the volume of goods determine its prosperity and decline, while it depends primarily on the scope and economic development of port and so on, and the scope of port hinterland is an important factor. Therefore, it has become an important research topic how to use the scientific method of model to determine and the scope of the port hinterland that is abasis for planning and construction of the port.The paper mainly engages the following study work about the above content:Firstly, introduce the background of Papers, summarize the related research at home and abroad, and put forward three levels of meaning that port hinterland research: the state's port construction macro guidance significance, the port's own business operational and practical significance, and the significance of the theory of port hinterland scope itself.Secondly, define port hinterland from the broad and narrow. Broad definition is the whole scope that covered by the influence of the port, and the narrow definition is the city or region that provide regular and fixed goods, which is reasonable that transport through the port.Thirdly, according to some theory of relationship between the port and the port hinterland, put forward the three components of port hinterland, that is, inter-regional differences in the functions of the ports and the hinterland to the port and transport, and joint development of the hinterland.Fourthly, analyze the factor that affect the hinterland range according to the inscape of the relation between the port with hinterland and the index which is been estimated the port competition. Fifthly, Qingdao and Tianjin have been cited as examples, divide their hinterland scope by using gravitational model methods and breaking point, propose the detailed suggestion and measures to foster and promote extend the hinterland scope, achieved comprehensive application of theoretical research and practical analysis.
