The manufacturing sector is a pillar industry of the national economy. After 20years of reforming and opening up, the development of the manufacturingindustry in Guangdong has experienced three stages: the 1980s, food and drink, textiles and garments developed rapidly as pillar industries; the late 1980s to theearly 1990s, durable goods industries are growing rapidly, such as colortelevisions, refrigerators, air-conditioning products; after the mid-1990s, the foodand drink, textiles and garments, construction materials and other industriescontinue to keep their edge, electronic information, electrical machinery, petrochemical, and other industries are developing rapidly, the high processingand manufacturing industries to enter the development stage. This paper uses the DEA and Malmquist Index approach to calculate theefficiency scores of individual firms. It then employs a simple linear regressionto identify the key determinants of efficiency scores. The results show that: Therelatively productivity of high-tech manufacturing is higher, but it's TC index islow, resulting in Malmquist index productivity grow slowly. The Malmquistindex productivity and TC index of resource processing industry is higher, butit's relatively productivity is low, meaning that the resource processing industryis lack of competitiveness. The relatively productivity and EC index ofmachinery and electronic manufacturing is higher, but it's TC index is low, resulting in lower than resources processing industry in Malmquist productivityindex. Manufacturing productivity of Guangdong increased every year whichlargely depended on the changed of technical. This shows that the technicalefficiency of manufacturing industry in Guangdong province is not high, and alsolack of competitiveness. According to the regression we find that: domesticshareholding companies, joint-ventures and subsidiaries of foreign manufacturingcompanies are more efficient than state-owned firms; The management levelinfluence Manufacturing production efficiency, and it's verysignificant.
