| "Face"as a behavioral logic in Chinese traditional society dominates people's social behaviors in society and performances in different contexts. This paper takes the wedding ceremonies in Harbin as a context and carrier for the study of face behavior. By participant observation and deep interview, the paper presents an overall account of wedding ceremonies in Harbin and thereafter explores the social characteristics of face behavior reflected in Harbiner's wedding ceremonies, using relevant theories of sociology and anthropology. The paper not only proves the shared features of face work but also analyzes the innate links between face behavior and regional culture.In the view of the common ground of face and wedding ceremony, the paper puts forth the links between them on the basis of their characteristics in modern society and further explicates the necessity of their combination. Based on this, the paper makes some detailed analysis. Firstly, the participant and the relation type are described and analyzed from the information obtained by interview. The results show that the Harbiners'wedding was simple in ceremony, but abundant in etiquette and custom, and the mixed relation type is the main body of the relation type of participant group, with the corresponding"emotion rules"affecting the behavior in wedding. Secondly, the behavior of face was divided into moral type, social type and interactive type, which respectively referred to the face work scrupulously abided by wedding custom, the behavior of parading the family wealth and the behavior of"giving face". Meanwhile, the qualitative analysis of face behavior is made in terms of the principal part of behavior, behavior intensity, characteristics, behavior interaction and principle. The result showed that the primary characteristic of face work is conspicuous, the core of face behavior is family, the intensity of behavior is in positive correlation with the income but not increasing in proportion, behavior interaction manifests the hierarchical structure, and the behavior principle follows game theory action of emotion-profit. In the analysis, the paper makes some innovation both in conception and theory. The face behavior in Haerbiners'wedding ceremony is not only affacted by the wedding ceremony itself but also affected by the regional culture of Harbin, so on the one hand, it reflects the commonness of face work, and on the other hand it also reflects the regional culture of Harbin which is characterized by costliness, diversity, local color, etc. By the double effect of face behavior and regional culture, the behavior of Harbiners tends to be irrational and there are some contradictions in the cultural system of Harbin. As a result, the paper suggests a constructive path for the interaction and the formation of cultural rationality and behavioral rationality.In real life context, the paper analyzes the issue of"face"which greatly influences many aspects in Chinese society, and thus enriches the theory of face work, making its content and characteristics more abundant and vivid by setting it in a fixed context. On the other hand, focused on the regional culture, the paper probes some disadvantages and therefore provides some information for constructing a better regional culture. |
