The dissertation consists of an introduction and five chapters.Chapter 1 includes a brief survey of the theoretical literature concerning the development of global automotive industry which can be categorized: the one is about the developmental trend of whole automotive industry and the strategy of automotive multinational companies; the other is about national automotive industry. Then brings forward the research angle of this dissertation, i.e. the theory of Global Production Networks.Chapter 2 summarizes the theory of Global Production Networks (GPNs), then integrates the status and characteristics of the global automotive industry into it, then analyses the configuration and characteristics of the Global Production Net of the automotive multinational companies.Chapter 3 analyses the cautions of the development of the Global Product Networks of automotive multinational companies. The cautions include the technology transform of automotive industry, the change of automotive customer market, the adjustment of the strategy of the automotive multinational companies. The development of the GPNs of the automotive industry is because of the emergence of new competitive environment, the firms will adjust their strategy and their relationship according to the new environment, then their feedback will also affect the competitive environment. They influence each other, which boost the development of the GPNs of the automotive multinational companies.Chapter 4 analyses the cases of development of the GPNs of automotive multinational companies. This chapter mostly discusses the relationship of the supply chain of Japanese, American and European automotive industry. This chapter makes use of the cases of Toyota in the American market, GM in the Chinese market and Bosch in the world to explain Japanese, American and European automotive multinational companies how to develop their GPNs.Chapter5 analyses and compares the common grand and differentia of the development of the GPNs of the Japanese, American and European automotive multinational companies, and analyses what we can learn from them.
